I work at home

I have just started to seriously work-at-home in the past couple of weeks. I write on the web for about three different people and I need to get all my jobs done before the end of the night. So I am fighting with my son for the computer and he's fighting with me because he wants my attention. I have started to get into a routine that works. He goes on the computer in the morning after I check my emails, then I do my offline research work, because he won't bug me then. Then we go out for a bit. The poor guy feels like he lives at an office sometimes. Then mostly all afternoon I work on the computer while he plays and watches TV.

I feel bad that he does spend that time alone. My office is in the dining room and living room so I am practically sitting with him. But the benefits are great. I get to be with him all day. I don't trust the daycare around here so that's our only option. Thank goodness I can write at home. biggrin

I know from my time of working from home that it is tough to balance. If you spend all day playing with the kids, you don't get work done. If you spend all day working, then why even stay at home? It sounds like you've found a nice balance. Besides, it probably helps for him to have a little down time. And I can't believe you get out of the house every day! That's admirable! It is good to get out of the house as much as possible.

Do you do much work after your son goes to bed at night? For me, I end up finding that the easiest time to work just because everyone is asleep and there are no distractions. Of course, we need sleep at SOME point, I suppose!!! rolleyes

I work for a long time when he goes to bed. But lately it's been hard to work when he goes to bed. He likes us to lay down with him until he falls asleep, that is a nasty habit I wish I never started. But I tried really hard and watching them do it on "Super Nanny" I thought for sure I could do it. (My husband works at night so he's not home to help.) It went really smooth and I had him trained in a week and a half to fall asleep by himself. But then a fire alarm went off in our building and he freaked. And now we are back to sleeping with him because it's easier than running around the apartment after him.

So the problem comes is that he'll only fall asleep if he knows you are committed to being there, so I fall asleep. I tell my daughter to wake me up in a half an hour, but she always forgets so I'm always groggy. So either I'm super awake until all hours of the night or so groggy I can't look at a screen.

But being a Mom, no day is never the same, that's what makes it so fun! mrgreen

Was this the separation thing? Our daughter would NEVER sleep without help, and constantly wanted to come to bed with us. We tried everything before that worked. It's such an easy thing to fall into when they are a baby, and it's so hard to derail once you do! Now she falls asleep on her own like a charm, and I made sure the twins never got used to falling asleep with so much help and they go down much easier than my first ever did. Perhaps I will write an article about the sleep issue! It's a huge one! And I used to do the exact same thing... It is EXHAUSTING getting a child to sleep... by the way they are asleep, you are too! I know there were times I would fall asleep trying to get her to sleep, then wake up and look over and she was just staring at me! I would think, "Crap!"
