Tonsil Removal Could Cure ADHD

posted by admin on Mon 21 of Jan, 2008 [18:38 UTC]

Who knew? It turns out that something as oddball as tonsil removal could cure ADHD, according to an Associated Press article at azcentral.com.

Here is an excerpt:

As medical studies are beginning to confirm, the removal of a child's tonsils can, in some cases, significantly improve, even cure, severe hyperactivity often diagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

Now affecting more than 2 million U.S. children, ADHD most often is treated with controversial psychoactive drugs, sometimes taken for a lifetime.

But in a significant number of these children - as many as half of those with an ADHD diagnosis, in one study - simply removing the tonsils also has removed the diagnosis, by restoring normal behavior.

Dividing Chores the Secret to Successful Marriage

posted by admin on Fri 20 of Jul, 2007 [17:28 UTC]

imageOK, so I'm not the only one who fights the most with her spouse about the chores. Whew! I knew it was a major issue. Well, it turns out one of the most crucial issues when it comes to marriage success is the chores.

In a study just released by the Pew Foundation entitled, "I like hugs. I like kisses. But what I really love is help with the dishes," researchers found some 62% of adults say sharing household chores is very important to marital success.

On this question, there's virtually no difference of opinion between men and women; or between older adults and younger adults; or between married people and singles.

In the public's ranking of keys to a successful marriage, "sharing household chores" still trails far behind the perennial leader — "faithfulness" --which is rated as very important by 93% of survey respondents, according to the survey.

But household chores are now nipping at the heels of the second-place item – "happy sexual relationship," which draws a very-important rating from 70% of survey respondents. It also beat out "adequate income" in the rankings.

Get some tips to keep your marriage happy: Divide the Household Chores.

Overweight Children Face Quality of Life Comparable to Cancer Patients

posted by admin on Thu 12 of Jul, 2007 [10:54 UTC]

Overweight children are stigmatized by their peers as early as age 3 and even face bias from their parents and teachers, giving them a quality of life comparable to people with cancer, a new analysis concludes, reports the International Herald Tribuneexternal link.

Those children who get teased for being obese are about two to three times more likely to report suicidal thoughts and health issues, according to a paper written by researchers with Yale University and the University of Hawaii at Manatoa in the July issue of Psychological Bulletin.

Here is a really disturbing revelation in the article:

"Several studies showed that overweight girls got less college financial support from their parents than average weight girls. Other studies showed teasing by parents was common."

Tiger Woods Gives Away Pictures of Newborn Baby Girl

posted by admin on Wed 27 of Jun, 2007 [00:18 UTC]

Good for Tiger Woods! He has shunned the celebrity MO of hiding a newborn and charging big bucks for release of the highly-anticipated baby pictures (a la Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes).

Sam Alexis Wood was born the day after Father's Day, according to National Ledgerexternal link. Tiger Woods posted some beautiful and intimate pictures of the baby, his wife and himself on his Web site.

Other celebrities should take note of this. With celebrity status comes certain responsibilities. The adoring fans are always eager to "ooh" and "ahh" over celebrity babies. It's not like these people are hard up for cash. Shoot, how many new parents could desperately use 1/100th of the amount some celebrities get just to help diaper and clothe their newborns?

Kudos to Tiger!

NICU Adding $1.2 Million Family Respite and Overnight Stay Area

posted by admin on Sun 24 of Jun, 2007 [20:35 UTC]

NICUAkron Children's Hospital is doing something every NICU should do: they are adding a family respite area next to the hospital's NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The hospital is able to add this benefit for NICU parents because of a $260,000 donation from Sterling Jewelry.

One of the worst things about having a baby in the NICU is the need to leave your baby at the hospital for frequent trips back and forth home. This type of addition is downright crucial for parents of critical NICU patients who are too afraid to leave the hospital for fear the baby will do while they are away.

The new addition at the NICU unit will allow families to rest of stay over. There will be lactation rooms, as well as a laundry area, kitchen, children's play area and library,

It is part of a major NICU renovation that create 21 private NICU rooms. That, too, is an outstanding addition. Most NICU parents are forced to visit their infant, an extremely emotional situation, in the company of several nurses and other parents.

What do you think? If you have a baby in the NICU, what was your opinion of the NICU facilities? Register or login at the top right to add your comments!

Lawnmowers Can be Deadly to Kids

posted by admin on Sat 23 of Jun, 2007 [22:41 UTC]

imageAs the weather gets warm and grass grows relentlessly, an important warning was recently issued by HealthNewsDigest.com about the dangers of mixing lawnmowers and kids.

It is also part of a launch of a new program by lawnmower manufacturer Husqvarna, which is including a bright yellow card and a "Kids and Mowers Don't Mix" key chain with each of its newly manufactured lawn tractors.

Some lawnmower safety tips included on the card are:

  • Know where your kids are. Keep kids away from the mowing area. Have adult supervision to prevent them from approaching the mower before you have finished. Stop mowing if a child approaches the mowing area.
  • Never give rides. A child may fall off the mower and into the spinning blades. Giving rides may also cause the child to be attracted to the mower and the child may later approach without being seen.
  • Use extreme caution in reverse. Keep alert for anyone who may enter the mowing area. Always look down and behind before and while backing up.
