Weave a Lavender WandA couple years back, I planted a dozen lavender plants to line my front walkway. A few of them were casualties to cut-through foot traffic and I lost one to an energetic boy wielding a lawnmower. The plants that remain are thriving this year, however. I love coming home and smelling their gentle, but pungent scent. I am amazed out how the scent is not only in the flowers, but permeates the whole plant. Just brushing the leaves as one walks by releases that trademark lavender perfume.

Beginning Knitting: Yarn WarsSometimes, when I am sitting in a group, talking and knitting at a sock, someone will gaze for a while at the rhythmic, magical bonding of yarn into stitches, and then say "I could never even begin to knit." Several years ago a friend’s ground floor apartment was tragically flooded one night, to such a extent that he had to move in with us for 6 months, whilst it was renovated to a suitable standard to become habitable once more. Needless to say all of his personal possessions were ruined. The experience had a profound effect on me and led me to consider how I would feel, if all of my worldly possessions were lost in one foul swoop.

The school year is almost finished and it is time to start thinking about teacher gifts.  My child is in kindergarten but because of his special needs, has been in the public school system for over 3 years.  He has a small army of dedicated professionals taking care of him and we try to show our appreciation at the end of the year (and throughout) with a small gift.  Through the years, I've compiled a list of some teacher gift ideas.

I believe that crafters are inherently good stewards of our planet.  We like to make it a prettier place and more often than not, we use items that were destined for a landfill.  In honor of Earth Day, I thought I would make a list of some of my favorite Earth-friendly craft ideas.

One night a husband and wife were talking. The wife said, "You know what would be cool? If I could print my own fabric." In another house, miles away, a similar conversation took place involving scrapbook paper. The husband said, "Make your own darn scrapbook paper." Two companies were born and now people all over the world are able to design, print, and buy their own fabric and scrapbook paper.

I love to craft with paper but for some reason, scrapbooking just wasn't doing it for me.  Once I switched to a digital camera, the thrill of putting pictures in a scrapbook or album kind of lost its allure.  That is when I turned to blogging.

A young U.S. soldier serving in Afghanistan wrote a letter to his mom asking for 16 pairs of handknit gloves for his unit just like the ones his grandmother used to make.  The mother wasn't able to fulfill that commitment herself so she contacted Halcyon Yarn in Bath, ME.
