We are a family of readers. We are also techno-addicted. Combine the two and you get the Tag Junior Book Pal, the perfect way to entertain and educate a toddler who is enamored of her older siblings’ handheld gaming systems. Sent to me by the folks at LeapFrog, the Tag Junior Book Pal is a fun way to let my toddler ‘read’ for herself.

Tag Junior Pros

As I said, our family loves to read. But anyone with a toddler knows that ‘I do it!’ is a phrase frequently heard. Tag Junior lets my little one ‘read’ all by herself, moving the simple-to-hold book pal across the page. The hardcover books interact as she moves the book pal, speaking phrases and encouraging her to repeat sounds. The system comes with one book, but there are several others available, including popular characters like Kai-Lan, Pooh, and Curious George.

I was concerned that it might be difficult to download the audio from the LeapFrog site but it couldn’t have been easier. Each book teaches different skills and - great for the holidays - there's even one that tells the Christmas story.

Tag Junior Cons

When you’re a toddler, variety is the spice of life and the only negative that I’ve found with the Tag Junior Book Pal is its limitations on the number of books that can be downloaded at one time. The Tag Junior can only hold audio for five books at a time, which means I’m limited to purchasing five books for my little one to enjoy – or I’ll spend all of my time at the computer switching out titles.

Some parents also might cringe at the $10 + price tag for additional books, but as a mother who is used to buying games for Nintendo and other hand-held games (that are much less educational, by the way), this doesn’t bother me.

Tag Junior Description

The Tag Junior book pal is easy for parents and children to use. Parents can download audio for up to five books to the book pal, then let their toddlers explore. Each Tag Junior board book introduces a different preschool skill - such as the alphabet, counting or social play - through 24 playful activities and more than 130 audio responses. Open-ended questions and fun sound effects encourage children to take charge, as they touch any part of any page to bring words, pictures or activities to life. After their child has played, parents can connect the book pal to the online LeapFrog® Learning Path to see their child's progress and get printable activities to expand the learning!
