Homemade Christmas Presents - No Sew Fleece Blanket
Written by Katelyn Thomas
It can be hard for children to create homemade Christmas presents that are useful and make impressive gifts. A simple no sew fleece blanket is one craft idea that will do the trick.
Fleece comes in many colors and patterns, which means children can pick out fleece with the logo of a favorite NFL team printed on it for their father, fleece with a pretty dolphin design for an older sibling and fleece with kittens on it for a cat loving grandmother or aunt. (The no sew fleece concept can also be used to make many other Christmas gifts. Popular projects include scarves and pillows.)
To make a no sew fleece blanket, children will need:
- 3 yards of fleece cut in half (If they want to make a reversable blanket, they should buy two coordinating 1 and 1/2 yard pieces.)
- Ruler
- Fabric scissors
Begin the project by making sure both pieces of fleece are nice and even. Put them on top of each other with the right sides out. (This means that the sides you want to show on the finished blanket are facing out and the sides you don't want to show are against each other.)
Next, cut a one inch wide fringe the whole way around the two layers. The fringe should be between three and four inches long. Four inches is best for a big blanket, while three inches creates a more balanced look on a smaller project. Cut the two corner pieces of fringe off of each side of the blanket so that the corners of the finished blanket don't look lumpy.
Then, knot each set of fringe pieces together. It is best to make double knots so that the blanket doesn't fall apart when the blanket is being used. Be careful you don't lose track of which two pieces go together. If you do tie the wrong ones together, you will need to untie them until you get back to the sets that are matched up the right way. Then, you can re-knot them with the right partners.
Once you tie the last set of knots, your no-sew blanket is ready to keep someone nice and cozy. Fold it up neatly and tie a pretty piece of ribbon around it and you've got a great homemade Christmas present that anyone will love.
