heifer international appalachiaHeifer International is a wonderful non-profit that is doing great work to end hunger and support families. Through their programs, adults - usually women - can provide food for their children and sell these home-grown foods at local markets. It is a sustainable approach to ending hunger. Type-A Mom is joining forces with the Traveling Mamas and BookstorePeople. We all admire and fully support the efforts of Heifer International. April is "Pass the Gift" month for this international nonprofit.

This great nonprofit organization that really has a positive impact on the world. Through carefully monitored donations, families in impoverished countries are given hens, geese, goats and other hardy animals - these families are also taught to care for and nurture their animals, so that the healthy creatures give them eggs, chicks to raise, and milk.

Part of the Heifer philosophy is that families who have been helped, pass their gift along by teaching and aiding other members of their communities to do the same. This ties very closely to Type-A Mom's own mission which, while not featuring as admirable a goal as ending hunger, is to create a place where more experienced mom writers help the inexperienced to learn the ropes of web publishing and, ultimately, support their families as work at home moms.

"Pass the Gift" this year also invites everyone who can, to host a dinner, cocktail party, or other event in we share what Heifer International is doing: Fundraising is fun when we do it with our friends, after all. It doesn't cost much to buy a chicken, and directly impact the quality of life of a hungry child.Heifer International is helping real families throughout the globe: in America (the photo above is in Appalachia), Africa, Europe, Asia (the photo below is from Cambodia).

Moms need to be able to feed their children. That's the bottom line.

To help spread the word about April being "Pass the Gift" month, Type-A Mom, Traveling Mamas and BookstorePeople are working together. Those sites are well worth a visit anyway (and ones I personally find great interest in as a traveling mom and the wife of an independent online bookstore owner).

The three sites are all concerned about the incredible poverty and related ills that many children live with in third-world countries. Rather than sit and ruminate, though, we all thought that raising awareness and money for Heifer International would take an active approach to helping improve these families' lives. Every reader who leaves a comment under the relevant post on all three sites will see a dollar donated to Heifer International, with a cap of $1,500.

To help, please comment below and then comment at the Heifer International posts at Traveling Mamas and the BookstorePeople.Consider it Commenting for a Cause. For just a couple minutes of your time you can help make a difference.

This fundraiser runs through April 30. There's never been an easier way to donate money to a truly good cause!

Caitlyn is part of the East Valley Youth Goat Project in Morgan Country, Ky. Her family has been minining coal for generations but it has become less reliable for income so the project seeks to teach life skills to youth while creating opportunities for extra income for farm families in the county. “I feel very happy that I am helping my family and taht I can take care of something on my own," Caitlyn said. Photo at bottom (courtesy of Heifer International/Darcy Kiefel) Keo Teuk (right) and her sister, Keo Champai, pose with one of the family’s chickens in their home in the village of Banlech, Cambodia. Their mother, Mrs. Keo Vann is a Heifer International recipient who is raising chickens for eggs to sell to add to the family’s income.

I'm not a Mom, but think I'm still allowed to say that this seems a great cause
and this it's brilliant seeing social media being used to raise money in this
way.
I hope the ceiling is reached and that lots of fundraisers are held too.

Thanks to Kim at Bookstorepeople, we are aware of Heifer Intl. Most recently,
again thanks to Kim who's hosting a beach party--price of admission: donation to
Heifer--our daughter chose to give a beehive (she paid for half out of her
allowance!). Off now to the other sites....

I love Heifer Int'l. Thanks so much.
IPlanInteriors 2009-04-20 12:32:15

You go girls!
My church sends groups to Honduras to work with Heifer Int'l
there to build houses. They do more than provide the animals. It's an
impressive organization.
Sarah 2009-04-21 11:18:17

What a great cause!
Kelly Ann T. 2009-04-23 17:17:32

Our church supports this worthwhile organization that makes a positive
difference in the lives of the families that receive these animals.
Maybe not the best cause
Rolf Amundsen 2009-04-24 06:42:44

While Heifer’s dedication is admirable, they tend to ignore in typical
Caucasian-centric fashion that the majority of the world is lactose intolerant:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3833/is_20 0007/ai_n8910221/

Also, the
idea of introducing new, non-native animals and plants into ecosystems that are
already rather fragile should alarm any student of environmental
science.

Finally, Heifer is promoting a Western-style diet rich in fats and
protein, which is perhaps not suited for every poor person in the world.

I’m
all right with donating a dollar (for a grand total of $49 for this site, which
makes that cap of $1,500 all the more humorous) to get my views out there.
Robin 2009-04-25 17:54:36

Here in the Appalachian Region of the US Heifer Int. national make a difference.
Our local organization supports sustainable agriculture education. They assist
in the farmers markets, and more. Besides for farm animals, they also gives away
vegetable and flower seeds. They do so much more...
Let's get there!

I have supported Heifer for several years and have had the opportunity to meet a
recipient of a water buffalo. The gift enabled the family to send their
children to school. A gift that keeps on giving.

I came across you project on a Twitter post and thought I would drop you
a line. Thanks for what you are doing to help spread the word about Heifer's
work and for your commitment to donate. I just kicked off the second annual Big
Moo Canoe for Heifer International today and hope to bring together paddlers
from around the country to put "goats in their boats" with a challenge
paddle. Read more about it at http://www.moocanoe.com/ If you know a canoe or
