Greener Spring In Your Home
Written by Caroline Jorgensen
The month of April will mark Earth Day on the 22nd. But as I try to become more conscious of our planet and its limited resources, I make every effort to celebrate Earth Day during the entire month of April. So today’s post is one of a series that will focus on ways that we can be more eco-friendly parents while teaching our children important habits for years to come. And what is this week’s topic? Well, spring is finally here and I think its time we celebrate it in all its glory. Here are some ways to shake out those winter blues and bring a greener spring into your home with gardening tips, easy decorations and fun crafts.
Personally, I find there is no greener way to make our homes feel more like spring than to enjoy plant life in our homes. Blooms, new green buds, floral scents and fresh herbs will breathe life into all of us. Consider planting one of the following.
- Trees: Not sure what the benefits are of a new tree might be? Read this information. Not sure which kind of tree might work for your yard? Do some research here.
- Clarifying houseplants: Did you know that a NASA study found that a simple Spider plant can remove up to 96% of carbon monoxide in the air? Here is a list of house plants you might want to consider keeping in your homes to clear the air for you and your children.
- Garden of cutting flowers: Forget buying flowers at the grocery store to brighten up your home. Start growing your own! Here are some suggested plants which bloom continuously offering us fabulous flowers throughout the season.
- Herb garden: Here is one site’s top ten reasons why we should grow our own herb garden. And be sure to make your own herb garden containers too!
There are also some fun projects you might want to take on to make your spring a greener one. Check out some of these ideas.
- Birdfeeders: Using recycled or scrap wood, this might be a fun project for your handier family members.
- Wind chimes: Nothing relaxes me more than a wind chime on a breezy day. Here is a fun way to make your own with recycled materials around the home.
- Rag rugs: What an easy and fun way to use old scraps of material - check out these easy tips.
- Picture frames: Its time to frame some of your child’s own hand made master pieces. By using either old CD cases or left over popsicle sticks, you and your children will enjoy making some new picture frames for your home.
Finally, don’t forget to decorate your kids for spring! I just found these very affordable 100% organic t-shirts at Wal-Mart (yes, Wal-Mart) that have designs inspired by such stars as Gavin Rossdale, Beyonce and Keith Urban.
Get green and enjoy your spring!
