Parents and school teachers have long used children's literature for the basis of educational activities. Here are some of the most popular story stretchers from TypeAMom's Preschool Editor.

Reading is a Fun Learning Activity for PreschoolersThere are so many children's books out there - try usng a cultural book to teach your child compassion and understanding towards others. Or select an animal book for characters children love to relate to. And of course, books with people help highlight relationships with others to your children.

Whatever book you choose, you can create several learning activities for your preschoolers to stretch their minds and encourage broadened thinking.

Cultural Books for Preschoolers

Calling the Doves by Juan Herrera - Written by a Mexican poet, this book is a bilingual look at Juan's childhood.

On Mother's Lap by Ann Scott - Based in an Inuit settng, the story is timeless and relevant to all mothers everywhere.

Animal Books for Preschoolers

Curious George by H. A. Rey - The original Curious George tale is a timeless classic that children love generation after generation.

Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What do you See? by Bill Martin Jr. - Illustrated by Eric Carle, this rhythmic book features animals from North America and is a story that children can soon learn to "read" all by themselves.

Tale of Benjamin Bunny by Beatrix Potter - Another children's classic, Benjamin Bunny is the mischevious counsin to Peter Cotontail and together they go on another wild adventure.

Animal Dads by Sneed Collard - A fantastic story that highlights the unique features of various animal fathers and leaves children with the understanding that different dads have different ways of doing things and that is ok.

If you Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff - A sequal to the famous If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, ths book presents children with many learning activities.

The Water Hole by Graeme Base - A favorite at my house because of the rich and detailed illustrations, The Water Hole provides much more than a simple counting exercise for preschoolers.

Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle - Done in beautiful Eric Carle illustrations, Mister Seahorse has lots of extras with a large number of preschool learning activities.

People and Relationship Books for Preschoolers

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch - A heart-warming story of an unending parents love and the cycle of life, parents and teachers can use these learning activities with their preschoolers.

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Jackson - The original story in the series, Harold is an adventurous and imaginative boy that many preschoolers can relate to.

great book list! Thanks for the tips. We already have a ton of books but library
trips are always for bringing home special books that we may not already have on
our shelves.
