My family has been making a slow, but steady progression away from keeping up with Jones’ and towards becoming (sometimes kicking and screaming) a happy and well family that believes in loving the planet, keeping things simple, and getting real.
If you grew up in the 70’s, you might remember Woodsy Owl. I was big into Woodsy! He was green before
Last spring my family broke ground on our first vegetable garden. Finding that our soil was dense, clay-like, and lacking in essential nutrients, we spent a small fortune and many back-breaking hours working store-bought enhancements into the ground. Then we got smart: by creating our own compost with materials in our own kitchen and backyard, this year we can ensure a fertile garden for free.
Here on the East Coast, the weather is finally getting warmer; spring is in the air! It's time to start planning for a spring garden. In our efforts to conserve energy and money, we seal our houses tightly against drafts and air leaks. The downside to airtight houses, however, is that the lack of ventilation can compromise indoor quality, especially during the winter months, when we spend nearly 80% of our time indoors. Keep your air fresh: limit the amount of chemicals entering your home, open windows when the weather permits, and invest in a few air-purifying houseplants.
Living the green life does not have to mean significant financial investment. In many ways, going green can save you money. Here are some ways to move toward a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly lifestyle today, at no initial cost to you.

"Going green", unfortunately, has been voted one of the most overused terms of 2008. But trying to live a lifestyle that preserves and protects the world that we all share: that will hopefully never go out of style.
It's cold outside! It can be difficult to foster a love of nature when the mercury dips. Encourage your children to become junior scientists by helping them to become winter birdwatchers. They will develop their scientific reasoning skills and develop an interest in the great outdoors while staying snug and warm- indoors.
