Family Vacations
These days you can set off on a family trip and find that everyone is -- separately -- wrapped in the cocoon of an electronic device. Maybe the driver is listening to his MP3 player on the car speakers, while one teen is in the back watching a movie on a portable screen, the pre-teen is playing on a Game Cube, and Mom is up front blogging on the laptop, using her aircard for WiFi connectivity.
We are a comparatively outdoorsy family, but even so, an entire Spring Break away from friends and the fun hang-out activities of home (basketball, sleepovers, movies and electronic games without the usual restrictions) did not appeal to my boys, 14 and 11, so we planned a short 4-day, 3-night getaway.

Having members of your family come to visit for a weekend is one of the most enjoyable events in one's lifetime. I live far away from most of my family so I want to make sure every minute together is spent either catching up on family stories or making new memories with fun activities and delicious meals. There isn't much time in the period of a weekend, so the planning and set-up prior to the weekend is essential in order to host the perfect family get-together.
I may never get a gold medal in running or swimming, but I just might get one for packing for a trip. After 40-plus years on this planet I have figured how to pack efficiently. Now I may not always pack light, but I rarely arrive at my destination without everything I need.
I began skiing as a teenager. I loved it. I could not wait to take my children when they got older.
