Biggest Loser LogoDo-It-Yourself "Biggest Loser" contests are growing in popularity, and for good reason.

A study from Shape Up Rhode Island and published in the May 2009 issue of Obesity Journal found that weight loss competitions produce a significant weight loss in large numbers of people at minimum cost. Losing weight as a group not only provides a healthy level of competition, but also moral support and teamwork.

In a study conducted at the McMaster University and reported in the journal Appetite, researchers found that women who dine with other women will not always choose food that are lower in calories. However, women will be more selective in choosing healthier foods when they eat with men. Although support from friends is important when trying to lose weight, many women feel compelled to mirror the habits of other women in an effort to fit in, even when it goes against their goals.

It is estimated that over 1/3 of North Americans are actively trying to lose weight at any given time. That is why the diet industry is thriving and so many books and DVDs are dedicated to the “best way“ to accomplish weight loss. People don’t know which way to turn or what diet to try anymore. Carbs, no carbs? High protein, vegetarian? Blood type? Grapefruits only? It is baffling and often dangerous to apply all the fad diets to what is actually simple math.

Address Fatigue with Horned Melon

If we are not eating right our efforts at dieting and exercise are complemented with fatigue. Truth is we are more apt to work at eating right and continuing on a course of fitness when we have energy and less frustration. One remedy to fight fatigue is iron and a favorite source for most of us is melon. What usually comes to mind is our summer favorite, watermelon but let’s discover a new melon that packs a wallop of iron, the horned melon.

We know there’s often talk in the scientific community that keeps getting louder about the health benefits of tea, but is it loud enough? Usually they are talking about green tea, that’s the tea consumed more in the East. We Westerners, however, picked up our tea habits in colonial times. I assure you this topic relates to black, oolong and white as well; and goes back a little further than 1875 when England was introduced to black tea.

I'm a 36 year old who is (at minimum) 50 pounds overweight. On January 1st, I began a running program. Five months later, I'm still at it, even though I hadn't run a step since high school. I've lost more than ten pounds, I am seeing actual muscle in my legs, and my self confidence is through the roof. I'm here to tell you - if I can do it, so can you!
