Type-A Mom is a site designed to be created and maintained by the real know-it-alls in parenting, the moms.

Type-A Mom Story

Started by me, a real-life Type-A Mom, Kelby Carr, the site launched in April 2007. I had a three day weekend, and a lot of coffee. That extra day off from work, and three late nights in a row, gave me the nudge to get this site going full swing.

The dream of Type-A Mom came a year before that. I was on bed rest with my twins, and I was doing a lot of web writing. I had been doing web writing on the side for years and years, yet it was always a struggle and I still didn't make enough money to work from home. It just bugged me that it's so hard, in this day and age, for a mom to work from home.

This is ridiculous, considering how much we moms can do with a computer, internet access and our brains.

Type-A Mom Vision

My dream was to create Type-A Mom, a place where moms could, some day, earn enough money to ditch their day jobs. That is a lofty goal, perhaps, but my ultimate goal. I hope to accomplish that in a two-fold way. One, by allowing moms to earn a share of the revenue their articles actually attract.

The second way is to have free and open rules to allow moms on the site to promote themselves, either through free banner ads for mom editors, through allowing links to their own sites on mom profiles here, allowing moms to link to their own sites in bios at the bottoms of articles, or even just by providing a social network for moms to connect.

The other dream I had was to create a web site where the advice for moms was written by real moms, not just experts. I also wanted a two-way street. I didn't want a site where authors tell moms what to do. I wanted the moms to not only write the advice, but participate.

If one mom does an article with tips on boosting breast milk supply, for example, and a reading mom has a killer trick, I wanted her to add it. This is also a great way to allow moms to self monitor the mom conversation here. If, for example, one mom posts an article with questionable or controversial advice, moms can retort.

Type-A Mom's Future

The site is still building momentum, and all the moms here make it a wonderful community! I don't have investors, and I don't have, well, any cash to invest in it myself. This site is built by moms putting hard work into it, but in the end moms will be the ones who get all the goodies (I will always share the Adsense revenue 50-50, so if this site gets huge, you writers and editors get the rewards, as you should).

Despite a non-existent budget for marketing, the Word of Mom Marketing has been working to boost Type-A Mom. The incoming links alone have resulted in this new site already having a Google PageRank of 4, which is impressive. Type-A Mom has also already been cited on MSNBC.com and CNN.com. It's only up from here.
