Mom Topics - Adoption and Foster Children
November is National Adoption Month. YAY!! (If you could see me and if I was coordinated, you'd see me clicking my heels and dancing a jig right now.) We are trying to raise awareness of all forms of adoption, but especially the 130,000 kids that are currently waiting in US Foster Care for a real forever family of their own.
Did you know that the average age of the child that waits is 8, and there are plenty of waiting kids under the age of 5 that are part of sibling groups? Did you know that there are about as many boys and girls and about as many black kids as white kids that are waiting? Did you know that one in five children who are waiting in foster care to be adopted will have to leave the system without a family at age 18 or 21? These are not throw-away kids or bad kids or someone else’s kids. They are all of our kids and all of our responsibilities. What can you do? You, as part of the Mommy Blogger community, can do what you do best--post and blog. Please let your networks know about these resources and these kids.
- Get more information on foster care adoption.
- Check out these photolistings of children currently waiting for a family. Remember, you are not limited to kids in your area or state.
- Listen to the following Creating a Family Radio shows on adopting from Foster Care April 29, 2009 and May 14, 2008 Foster care adoption is not just for saints or the exceptional parent. It could work for your family too.
- The culmination of this month is National Adoption Day, Saturday, Nov. 21. Events are planned throughout the US to celebrate National Adoption Day. Please consider finding one and joining in the fun and show your support for adoption.
Now, let's get out there and post and blog this information. We can do this for the kids--for our kids. Thanks friends.
